Bob Smith spent years brewing beer as a hobby and developed a great vision of the Craft Beer future. In 1989, with the help of local investors, Smith founded Mad River Brewery using used equipment from the Chico-based Sierra Nevada brewery. The original building was 4,000 sq. feet and had 6 employees packaging 29 barrels per day. The first year of operation, the brewery sold twice as much beer as projected and demand has continued to grow. Current the award-winning brewery employs 40 people and produces over 15,000 bbls per year, which are distributed nationally. The brewery also features a retail tap room and kitchen at the production facility, an expanded product line including barrel aged products, and improved brewing and fermentation equipment.
