Gelinas James, Inc. began in 1992 with Roger G. James, Ed.D. and Mary V. Gelinas, Ed.D. in Oakland, CA. Their initial goals were to serve organizations in the Bay Area and throughout the US by providing an alternative to the large consulting firms who were rolling out "business re-engineering" and "change management" in mostly uncollaborative and top-down, command-and-control attempts to change organizations. Gelinas and James decided to provide an important and effective alternative with their approach to Collaborative Organization Design (their workbook for this process was published by Jossey Bass in 1998). At their largest, they had twelve other consultants on their staff and four support staff. They also partnered with other consulting firms when the projects were too large for them to handle independently.
Eventually, tired of travel and working in large organizations around the world (Chevron, Levi Strauss, Carrier, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Liz Claiborne), in 1999 the pair moved to Humboldt County with their business manager/executive assistant. At that time, they expanded their practice to include more government agencies, not-for-profits, and educational institutions. Gelinas and James became directors and core faculty of the Cascadia Center for Leadership in 2001. They continue to serve clients locally and nationally.
"We help leaders, organizations, boards and communities create their desired futures through innovative, collaborative and practical approaches to leading, creating change, planning, and solving problems. Our tested and pioneering approaches are based in the behavioral and brain sciences along with experience and common sense.” Mary Gelinas, Co-Founder Gelinas James, Inc.
